Suwon City Provides Emergency Disaster Relief Fund of 500,000 KRW to Substitute Drivers
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province will provide 500,000 won of the 'Suwon-type Emergency Disaster Relief Fund' to designated driver workers who are experiencing difficulties due to a sharp decline in income as the 'Social Distancing Level 4' continues amid the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic.
Suwon City announced on the 6th that from the 8th to the 29th of this month, it will open a banner titled 'Application for Suwon-type Emergency Disaster Relief Fund for Designated Driver Workers' on the Suwon City website to accept support applications. Applications can also be submitted via email (dakssal2@korea.kr) or by mail (Labor Policy Division, 3rd floor, Nitro Building, 24 Gyeongsu-daero 446beon-gil, Paldal-gu, Suwon City). Mailed applications will be accepted if postmarked by the 29th of this month.
Eligibility requires that, as of October 6, applicants must be registered residents of Suwon City and have worked as designated driver workers without employment insurance during May to June of this year. Additionally, applicants must meet all of the following conditions: an annual income of 50 million won or less last year, and a monthly income decrease of 25% or more in any month from July to September this year compared to any month from January to June this year.
The city will review applications and supporting documents and then disburse the relief funds to the applicant’s bank account in their name starting from the 15th of this month. The amount is 500,000 won per person.
Last year in April and again from March to May this year, the city provided the 'Suwon-type Emergency Disaster Relief Fund' twice to workers facing difficulties due to the spread of COVID-19, including special-type workers, freelancers, unpaid leave workers, and unemployed youth.
During the second support period from March to May, 706 designated driver workers received the relief fund.

Yeom Tae-young, Mayor of Suwon City, said, "Since July, social distancing has been raised to Level 4, and the number of people allowed in private gatherings after 6 p.m. has been limited to two, causing great difficulties for designated driver workers. I hope this disaster relief fund will provide some support to designated driver workers."
