View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] It has been revealed that the fire safety systems for large logistics warehouses and super-tall buildings are inadequate.
On the 6th, Oh Young-hwan, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea (Uijeongbu City Gap, Administrative Safety Committee), analyzed the fire alarm log records from July 1 to 10 for five logistics warehouses with a total floor area of over 100,000㎡ and 35 super-tall buildings with more than 50 floors, submitted by the National Fire Agency. The analysis showed that 570 false fire alarm signals occurred at 30 locations, causing repeated shutdowns and restorations of fire safety facilities.
During the ten days, locations with more than 20 false fire alarms included a logistics complex in Seoul (320 times), a logistics center in northern Gyeonggi Province (28 times), Apartment B in Seoul (22 times), and a building in Yeongdeungpo (20 times), in that order.
In particular, the logistics complex in Seoul experienced 320 false fire alarms over ten days, resulting in 83 repeated shutdowns and restorations of fire safety facilities.
Additionally, in the first half of this year, fire trucks were dispatched 69 times due to malfunctions of fire safety facilities at logistics warehouses over 100,000㎡ and super-tall buildings over 50 floors, wasting unnecessary firefighting resources and budgets.
Due to frequent false fire alarms and malfunctions of fire safety facilities, some sites have completely shut down fire safety systems, leading to failures in early fire suppression and resulting in large-scale fires.
Representative cases include the fire at the Coupang logistics center in Deokpyeong, Icheon, Gyeonggi Province in June, and the parking lot fire at an apartment in Cheonan in August, where shutting down fire safety facilities led to missed early suppression and significant damage.

Assemblyman Oh stated, "A management system should be established to regularly receive and analyze related data such as receiver log records and dispatch cases caused by malfunctions for each fire target, in order to develop fundamental measures to prevent false alarms." He also pointed out, "The mandatory installation targets for analog detectors that are adaptive to false fire alarms should be expanded, considering the work environment and building usage characteristics."
