Train operator who announced "Family died due to dating violence" removed from duty
Revealed as Family of Victim in 'Mapo-gu Dating Violence'
Seoul Metro States "Violation of Regulations Regardless of Circumstances"
[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] A subway operator who appealed through an onboard announcement that "a family member was a victim of dating violence" during subway operation has reportedly been excluded from work.
According to Seoul Metro, on September 16, while operating Seoul Subway Line 4, operator A made an announcement saying, "This announcement may be uncomfortable, but this is the only way I can inform you. Please understand. My family member recently died due to dating violence, and I have posted a national petition, so I ask for your attention." The day after the announcement, A was excluded from work.
Seoul Metro excluded A from driving duties on the grounds that A broadcasted personal matters. Currently, A is receiving work-related training within the company. The company plans to conduct an audit on A and then decide on disciplinary action.
A Seoul Metro official stated, "Aside from the unfortunate story, there are regulations that prohibit such actions during work, so A has been excluded from duties."
After A's subway announcement, a netizen expressed sorrow on social media, saying, "(After hearing the subway announcement) I almost cried out of sadness."
A is known to be a family member of the victim in the 'Mapo-gu dating violence' case. On July 25, the female victim B was assaulted by her boyfriend during an argument at an officetel in Mapo-gu, Seoul, resulting in gastrointestinal bleeding, rib fractures, and lung damage. B fell into a coma and passed away on August 17 due to traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage.
B's mother posted on the Blue House national petition board on the 25th of last month with the title "I am the mother of a daughter who died after being assaulted by her boyfriend," revealing her daughter's face to the media and urging for the disclosure of B's personal information and a thorough investigation including arrest. The petition, which closed on the 24th, received over 530,000 signatures.
