[2021 National Audit] Importing 80% of Green Hydrogen... Yoon Soon-jin Says "No Threat to Energy Security"
Regarding the question on electricity rate increases due to the expansion of renewable energy, "I have never thought about it"
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Haeyoung] On the 5th, Yoon Soon-jin, Chair of the Carbon Neutrality Committee, stated, "We will import 80% of the demand for green hydrogen from overseas," but also said it would not pose a significant threat to domestic energy security.
On the same day, Yoon appeared as a witness at the National Assembly's Industry, Trade, Energy, Small and Medium Enterprises Committee's audit and responded to criticisms that the government's green hydrogen supply targets cannot keep up with demand, stating, "We currently import over 90% of our energy demand," and "As renewable energy increases, energy security will be further strengthened." This was in response to Rep. Yang Geum-hee of the People Power Party's point that the petrochemical industry requires 5.6 million tons and POSCO needs 3.7 million tons of green hydrogen for hydrogen reduction steelmaking, exceeding the government's supply target of 5.26 million tons.
