[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) is taking the lead in the competition for smart ship-related technologies.
DSME announced on the 5th that its self-developed smart ship platform, DS4, has become the first in the industry to obtain PDA certification in the field of CyberSafety from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).
The PDA certification obtained this time is a 'product certification,' which means it meets more specific and strengthened requirements to be immediately applicable to actual ships, objectively verifying the quality. The previously secured cybersecurity level was at the 'Approval in Principle (AIP)' stage, which reviewed the appropriateness of the product concept.
DSME's recent PDA certification is evaluated as having raised the level of its proprietary smart platform cybersecurity technology by one step, receiving the highest grade currently attainable in this field.
The shipbuilding and marine industry is focusing on smart ship technology, which has emerged as a core trend, and is actively engaged in related research and development. In particular, as systems connecting ships at sea and land continue to advance, the need for cybersecurity to safely protect various data and software of operating ships from external threats is rapidly increasing. Since hacking of smart and autonomous ships can cause significant direct and indirect damage, cybersecurity systems are now emphasized as a core element of autonomous ships.
