Jeonbuk Jeongeup-si "Pet Registration, Not an Option but a Must"
[Jeongeup=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] Jeongeup City in Jeonbuk has embarked on fostering a mature pet culture to prevent conflicts between pet owners and non-pet owners and to create a city where they coexist happily.
Jeongeup City announced that it will conduct a focused crackdown until the 31st on owners who have not registered their pets and pet owners who have failed to report changes in information.
The crackdown will be carried out mainly at key entry points for companion dogs in areas such as the Jeongeupcheon riverside, parks, and residential areas where pet walking is frequent.
Related officials and honorary animal protection monitors will use RFID (registration information) readers to intensively check whether animals are registered, and fines will be imposed if violations are found.
Animal registration is a system implemented since 2014 under the 'Animal Protection Act.' Dogs aged two months or older kept for companionship in houses, semi-houses, or other places must be registered.
Violations are subject to fines of up to 1 million won, and even if the animal is registered, failure to report changes will result in fines of up to 500,000 won.
A city official stated, “Animal registration is a mandatory requirement to protect precious companion animals and is a promise to responsibly care for pets as family members,” adding, “We ask for much interest and participation to prevent animals from being lost or abandoned.”
