[Agyeong Poll] People Power Party 40.1% vs Democratic Party 36.9%
Democratic and People Power Party Support Rates Rise Together
Highest Levels Recorded This Year
People Power Party Strong Among 20s-30s and 60+
Democratic Party Support High Among 40s
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] Support ratings for both the Democratic Party of Korea and the People Power Party have risen simultaneously, with both parties reaching their highest levels this year. The People Power Party, which has been demanding a special prosecution for the Daejang-dong development scandal and a national audit, surpassed a 40% support rate. The intense exchanges between the two parties over allegations such as the ‘accusation leak’ and ‘preferential treatment in the Daejang-dong development project’ are interpreted as having led to the consolidation of their respective support bases.
On the 28th, Asia Economy commissioned Win-Gi Korea Consulting to conduct a public opinion survey from the 25th to the 26th targeting 1,016 voters nationwide aged 18 and older (100% mobile phone virtual numbers, automated response). When asked about their ‘preferred political party,’ 40.1% of respondents answered the People Power Party. The Democratic Party of Korea showed 36.9%, with the gap between the two parties within the margin of error at 3.2 percentage points. The People Power Party, which has shown a continuous upward trend in the last four surveys and overtook the Democratic Party for the first time in the previous survey, has maintained its strong position. Compared to the previous survey (conducted on the 11th-12th), the People Power Party’s support rose by 5.4 percentage points, and the Democratic Party’s by 5.3 percentage points.
Support rates for parties other than the two major ones were in the order of the People Party, Open Democratic Party, and Justice Party. Among these, the Open Democratic Party (6.8% → 3.7%) and the Justice Party (4.0% → 2.5%) decreased by 3.1 percentage points and 1.5 percentage points respectively compared to the previous survey. Their combined decrease of 4.6 percentage points is similar to the increase in the Democratic Party’s support rate. The proportion of respondents without a preferred party (including those unsure) dropped significantly from 13.7% to 7.9%, a decrease of 5.8 percentage points, some of whom are interpreted to have shifted their support toward the People Power Party.
By age group, the People Power Party received high support among those in their 20s and 30s, as well as those aged 60 and above, while the Democratic Party led among those in their 40s. Notably, among people in their 20s, the People Power Party’s support was 43.8%, whereas the Democratic Party’s was only 27.0%, resulting in a gap of 16.8 percentage points. This is the second-largest gap after the 40s age group (Democratic Party 49.8% vs. People Power Party 29.4%, a 20.4 percentage point difference). Regionally, the People Power Party had higher support than the Democratic Party in Seoul, Gyeonggi·Incheon, Chungcheong, Daegu·Gyeongbuk, and Busan·Ulsan·Gyeongnam, while the Democratic Party led in the Honam region.
