Chinese Foreign Ministry: "Meng Wanzhou Case, Political Persecution Aimed at Suppressing Chinese Companies"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Jo] The Chinese government, in a statement regarding the release and return of Meng Wanzhou, Vice Chairwoman of Huawei, claimed that this case is "a political persecution of a Chinese citizen, aimed at suppressing China's high-tech companies."
According to China Youth Network, Hua Chunying, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated on the 25th, "China's position on the Meng Wanzhou case has been consistent and clear." Hua also said, "The so-called 'fraud' charges against Ms. Meng are completely fabricated," adding, "What the United States and Canada have done is a typical arbitrary detention."

Meng, daughter of the founder of Chinese telecommunications equipment company Huawei, was abruptly released from house arrest in Canada on the 24th (local time) after reaching an agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice to defer prosecution. She was arrested in Canada in December 2018 on charges including violating U.S. sanctions against Iran, released on bail, then indicted by U.S. prosecutors, and had been undergoing extradition proceedings from Canada to the U.S. while under house arrest.
