Samsung 'Galaxy S22' to be Narrower and Shorter than iPhone 13
[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Eun-mo] As Samsung Electronics' next-generation flagship smartphone, the ‘Galaxy S22,’ is expected to be the smallest smartphone released in recent years, an image that allows us to estimate its actual size has been revealed.
On the 21st (local time), IT specialized media GSM Arena reported an image comparing the expected size of the S22 with its predecessor ‘Galaxy S21’ and Apple’s new smartphone ‘iPhone 13,’ citing the famous IT tipster (leaker) Ice Universe.
According to the released image, although the exact dimensions of the S22 were not mentioned, it appears narrower and shorter than both the S21 and the iPhone 13, which measures 71.5 x 146.7mm in width and height respectively. Ice Universe also revealed expected images of the base S22 model along with the ‘Galaxy S22 Plus (+)’ and ‘Galaxy S22 Ultra,’ allowing a size comparison among the three models.
Previously, Ice Universe reported that the screen size of the S22 would shrink to 6.06 inches (15.4 cm). Samsung Electronics last released a flagship smartphone with a screen smaller than 6 inches in 2019 with the ‘Galaxy S10e,’ which had a screen size of 5.8 inches (14.7 cm). The sizes of the ‘Galaxy S20’ and the base S21 models released afterward were 6.2 inches (15.7 cm).
As the screen size decreases, the battery capacity is also expected to reduce. According to Ice Universe, the estimated battery capacity of the S22 is 3700 milliampere-hours (mAh), which is less than the S21’s 4000mAh. Samsung Electronics is expected to address the negative impact of the reduced battery capacity through improvements in the application processor (AP) and other components in the future.
Meanwhile, there are expectations that the S22+ model will be equipped with a new triple camera. According to IT specialized media LetsGoDigital, the existing 12-megapixel wide-angle camera is likely to be replaced with a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera featuring 1.0-micrometer (μm) pixels, a 1/1.57-inch image sensor, and ultra-fast autofocus capabilities. The 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera is expected to be retained.

Additionally, the telephoto cameras on the S22 and S22+ are expected to be replaced with a 10-megapixel 3x optical zoom camera, which is also equipped on the S21 Ultra. This image sensor offers enhanced zoom functionality despite having a lower resolution than the 64-megapixel zoom camera used on the S21+. The current model provides 3x hybrid zoom and 30x digital zoom, while the new image sensor supports 3x optical zoom without loss of image quality.
