According to AFP and DPA, the epicenter was observed near Mansfield, about 200 km northeast of Melbourne, with a focal depth of 10 km.
The earthquake was also detected in downtown Melbourne, hundreds of kilometers away. However, no building damage from the earthquake has been reported.
