Special Child Meal Program "Eomma Dosirak" in Yangcheon-gu Continues for 7 Years... Kit Boxes with Ready Meals Delivered to Children at Risk of Missing Meals During Chuseok Holiday
Last year, Kim Soo-young, Yangcheon District Mayor, made lunchboxes for mothers. This year, she could not attend the event due to the COVID-19 Level 4 restrictions.

Yangcheon-gu’s ‘Mom’s Lunchbox,’ which delivers nutritious lunchboxes to children who find it difficult to have meals due to the absence of parental care during the holiday, has been a project personally overseen by Mayor Kim Soo-young every holiday since Lunar New Year 2015. So far, over 600 children have received Mom’s Lunchbox.
Children from child-headed households, single-parent families, and dual-income families often rely on meals at local children’s centers or use Dream Tree Cards to have meals at affiliated restaurants. However, during holidays, many Dream Tree Card affiliated stores are closed, and since children are often left alone, it is difficult for them to have a properly nutritious meal.
This Chuseok, due to the impact of COVID-19, a kit box worth approximately 37,000 KRW consisting of retort pouch foods that children can easily prepare themselves (cup rice, army stew, smoked whole chicken, short rib soup, snacks, fruits, etc.) will be delivered. The packaged kit boxes will be delivered by the Happy Lunchbox Social Cooperative, which runs the Yangcheon Home Meal Project, and the Yangcheon Love Welfare Foundation also partially sponsors the meal costs every year.
The recipients were selected through the local community centers. Love lunchboxes will be delivered according to the schedule of each district from September 16 to 17 to 62 children at risk of missing meals, including those targeted by the child meal project and those wishing to receive Mom’s Lunchbox.
Kim Soo-young, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, said, “With a mother’s heart that no child should go hungry during the long holiday, we have prepared warm love lunchboxes again this Chuseok. We will continue to actively strive to support quality meals so that our children can grow up healthy.”
Gangbuk-gu (Mayor Park Kyum-soo) held an online video meeting on the 8th with 383 community leaders from 13 neighborhoods at the district office and each community center’s meeting rooms.
Community leaders, who have played a role in gathering residents’ opinions and promoting district policies, were unable to perform face-to-face duties due to the spread of COVID-19. Accordingly, the district planned a non-face-to-face Zoom meeting to share issues that had not been communicated for a long time and to discuss various measures needed for residents’ lives.
The meeting was held twice, in the morning and afternoon. It proceeded with updates on COVID-19-related issues, viewing a humanities lecture, and neighborhood meetings. Due to the prolonged COVID-19 situation and continued social distancing extensions, the district requested community leaders to carefully watch over their surroundings and actively identify neighbors in need. They also asked for cooperation in connecting those needing help to the community centers to ensure no welfare blind spots.
Additionally, the district conveyed key measures related to the extension of the metropolitan area’s level 4 social distancing, special quarantine measures for the Chuseok holiday, information on applying for national support funds, and the Gangbuk Safe Entry Call application, all related to COVID-19.
The community leaders watched a humanities lecture titled “The Source of Seoul, Bukhansan” by Professor Kim Doo-gyu of Woosuk University. They spent time reflecting on the need to restore the historical and cultural status of Bukhansan, a regional resource of Gangbuk-gu.
