Say "Jeoe Selection System" Instead of "Minus Option"
“Minus Option” and “Plus Option”
to Be Replaced with
“Jeoe Selection System” and
“Chuga Selection System”
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended on September 15 that the term "minus option" be replaced in Korean with "jeoe selection system," "jeoe selection right," or "jeoe selection item." They also suggested "chuga selection system," "chuga selection right," and "chuga selection item" as Korean alternatives for "plus option."
The "minus option" refers to a system in which the consumer chooses not to select certain items from a set of basic options. The terms "jeoe selection system," "jeoe selection right," and "jeoe selection item" were chosen based on survey results. In a public acceptability survey conducted from September 3 to 8 with about 2,000 participants, 95% of respondents said the alternatives were appropriate. Additionally, 55.1% agreed on the need to replace the foreign terms with Korean equivalents.
The "plus option" refers to a system in which the consumer adds certain items beyond the basic options. At a neologism committee meeting held on September 1, the Ministry and the Institute selected "chuga selection system," "chuga selection right," and "chuga selection item" as the Korean alternatives.

The neologism committee is a body that provides easy-to-understand Korean alternatives for difficult foreign neologisms before they become widespread. Experts from various fields, including Korean language, foreign languages, education, public relations and publishing, information and communications, and media, participate in the committee. The Ministry and the Institute plan to continue promoting the use of these alternatives by encouraging government agencies and media organizations to take the lead.
