The Secret of 4-Inch Tee: "Various Uses Unknown to Amateurs?"
High Launch for High Trajectory Draw, Low Launch for Low Trajectory Fade "Find the Right Height"
A golf tee is only 4 inches long but exerts a powerful influence on score making.

The golf tee, first developed by William Lowell, a dentist from New Jersey, USA, is limited to a maximum of 4 inches by the rules. However, players insert the tee differently depending on the wind direction or the shape of the hole. A higher tee produces a high trajectory with a draw, while a lower tee results in a low trajectory with a fade shot. There are various uses that amateurs do not know. Although small, it exerts powerful influence on score making.
First, the tee height should be appropriate. The ball should be about halfway above the driver head. This allows the club to form impact as it passes its lowest point and rises, causing the ball to lift and increasing carry (the distance the ball flies). If the tee is too high, it naturally causes adverse effects such as a high trajectory hook shot. In headwinds, the tee height is lowered. Contacting the ball below the face produces a low trajectory and relatively more roll (the distance the ball rolls).
Players also use the tilt of the tee when inserting it. If the tee is slanted toward the target direction, the trajectory lowers and a fade shot occurs even at the same height; the opposite direction raises the trajectory and produces a draw shot. Additionally, teeing ground know-how is applied. If an out-of-bounds (OB) area or water hazard is created on one side of the fairway, the safe side of the fairway is split in half and a virtual target is set at the center.
Next is the spot where the tee is inserted. Many teeing grounds on golf courses are sloped for drainage. The area allowed within 2 clubs is used effectively. Even if moving backward, finding the flattest spot is a priority. It is interesting that amateur golfers always prefer the front. Also, inserting the tee on a flat spot but placing both feet on a sloped area is a mistake. This makes a comfortable swing impossible. Remember that stance comes first.

After inserting the tee, always shake it back and forth to check that it is not stuck in the ground. This is a habit to minimize resistance from the tee even slightly. Nowadays, tees have lines drawn on them to accurately measure 'my own height.' For beginners and intermediates, tees also help with accurate contact on par 3 holes where irons are chosen. Players and experts do not insert tees on front pins. They stop the ball immediately with strong spin.
