[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The government is set to support the establishment of a 'digital government' foundation in Uzbekistan.

On the 14th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that it will hold an online seminar at 2 p.m. that day between the Korean digital government delegation and Uzbek digital government officials.

About 30 participants from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Ministry of Science and ICT, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Korea Culture Information Service Agency, National Information Society Agency, and Korea Local Information Research & Development Institute will attend the online seminar. From Uzbekistan, over 50 officials and experts from the Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications Development, the main ministry in charge of digital government, as well as related digital sector ministries, will participate.

Uzbekistan, a key partner country in the New Northern Policy region, is one of the countries showing great interest in digital government development. Last year, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety established the 'Korea-Uzbekistan Digital Government Cooperation Center' in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, and plans to operate it until 2022.

At the seminar, Uzbekistan will introduce its core digital policies, including the Uzbekistan e-Government and Digital Economy Development Plan. The Korean side will explain the promotion plans and strategies for a total of four topics centered on joint cooperation projects currently underway at the Korea-Uzbekistan Digital Government Cooperation Center. The four topics are the national artificial intelligence strategy, AI utilization cases in public sectors such as education and culture, informatization village cases to bridge regional digital divides, and responses to the UN e-Government survey.

The topics discussed at this seminar will be used to discover follow-up projects through the cooperation center. From 2009 to 2019, Uzbekistan introduced approximately $200 million worth of Korean-style public sector information systems, including the national geographic information system, national electronic library, electronic trade system, and intelligent power remote metering system.

Korea plans to continue discovering various projects such as the government integrated data center and smart city to expand the introduction of Korean-style digital government in Uzbekistan and support the advancement of Korean companies.

Meanwhile, as the main ministry in charge of digital government, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety has been dispatching joint government digital government delegations more than twice a year since 2018, focusing on key partner countries in the New Southern and New Northern Policies to actively respond to international cooperation demands. Since 2020, due to the global spread of COVID-19, it has expanded non-face-to-face online cooperation seminars with overseas governments instead of dispatching delegations.

Jung Seon-yong, Director of the Digital Government Bureau at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, said, “The activation of non-face-to-face international cooperation using online seminars is becoming an opportunity to spread Korea’s digital government to more countries,” adding, “We will continue to actively utilize various non-face-to-face cooperation methods to engage with the international community and lay the foundation to expand the overseas advancement of our companies.”
