Daegu, Daejeon, Bucheon, Seoul, and Anyang Receive 'Excellent Smart City' Certification
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 10th that through the 'Smart City Certification' contest, five cities?Daegu, Daejeon, Bucheon, Seoul, and Anyang?and three districts in Seoul?Gangnam-gu, Guro-gu, and Seongdong-gu?were certified as excellent smart cities.
The Smart City Certification system is a program that comprehensively evaluates smart city achievements based on 63 indicators including innovation, governance, institutional environment, services, and technology, and grants certification accordingly.
Daegu received high marks for establishing an advanced service foundation such as an urban data hub for transportation, safety, and urban facilities, AI-based video analysis, and a big data-based traffic congestion prediction system.
Daejeon was recognized for supporting projects where smart city technologies developed by researchers in the Daedeok Innopolis are transferred to small and medium-sized enterprises to solve urban problems, and for building an electrical fire accident prevention system using Internet of Things (IoT) sensors.
Bucheon City built 'City Pass,' which integrates smart services such as transportation, environment, and safety, while Anyang City is establishing a metropolitan urban safety network through linkage among operation centers of 16 cities within Gyeonggi Province.
Seoul integrated streetlights, traffic signals, and CCTVs and installed advanced smart poles equipped with information and communication technologies such as Wi-Fi and IoT sensors. The city received high evaluations for its high-level smart city infrastructure, including the comprehensive traffic information platform (TOPIS) that integrates and analyzes traffic systems and provides traffic information to citizens.
Gangnam-gu integrated services provided by the district into a single app called 'The Gangnam App' and built a one-stop COVID-19 testing service system using QR codes, earning high praise.
Guro-gu operates a management system for aging facilities using IoT detection sensors, and Seongdong-gu was evaluated positively for features such as smart crosswalks equipped with warnings for vehicles violating stop lines and jaywalking pedestrians, as well as smart bus shelters that provide a pleasant environment and urban safety services.
However, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport explained that all certified cities were rated at grade 3, indicating that much effort is needed to improve to grade 1 in the future.
