Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do's Chukryeongsan Mountain, a National Sanctuary in the With-Corona Era
[Jangseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jo Hangyu] Chukryeongsan Geumgok Film Village, located in Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, is being reborn as a beautiful and clean hometown through the hands of its residents.
About 20 residents of Geumgok Film Village recently collected abandoned waste around the village and removed weeds. They also planted autumn flowers such as zinnias and cosmos along the village entrance road. The blooming period is expected around October.
Geumgok Film Village is situated at the foot of Chukryeongsan Mountain, a place that preserves the rural atmosphere and the touching scenery offered by nature. The narrow stone wall paths, the rice ripening yellow, and the tall cypress trees create a picturesque scene that fully captures the deepening autumn mood.
Especially at night, visitors can encounter the ‘late firefly,’ an insect known to inhabit only clean environments, attracting many family visitors.
The village is well known as the filming location of the movie Taebaek Mountains directed by the master director Im Kwon-taek, who is from Jangseong-gun. It is also famous as the filming site of the movie My Heart’s Melody starring Lee Byung-hun and Jeon Do-yeon.
This landscape improvement was promoted as part of the Rural New Vitality Plus Project. The New Vitality Plus Project is a public contest project by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs aimed at creating a foundation for organizing people and activities for the sustainable growth of rural areas.
Jangseong-gun proposed the ‘Cypress Forest Harmony (林) Healing Travel Project’ utilizing the Chukryeongsan cypress forest and was finally selected as a project site in 2019, securing a project budget of 7 billion KRW over four years.
Geumgok Film Village, selected as the target site for the base space (hardware) creation project within the Rural New Vitality Plus Project, is currently improving the village landscape and installing spaces for youth and resident income projects. Additionally, business items for village income generation are being developed.
Yoo Doo-seok, Jangseong County Governor, said, “Large-scale projects such as the Rural New Vitality Plus Project, the Chukryeongsan Sky Forest Trail Creation Project, and the Chukryeongsan Cypress Forest Space Recreation Project are being actively promoted with Chukryeongsan as the stage. We will lead the project to success by leveraging the power of public-private governance built through active cooperation and participation of local residents, and make Chukryeongsan a national sanctuary in the with-COVID-19 era.”
