Gyeonggi-do Requests to Call Car Parts "Jumunja Saengsan Bupum" Instead of "Original Parts"
Lee Jae-myung Promotes Activation of Alternative Certified Parts for SMEs to Ease Burden on Low-Income Households
[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Gyeonggi Province has requested online car parts sellers to replace the term 'genuine parts' with 'Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts.' This is because the term 'genuine' may give consumers a negative perception of 'certified alternative automotive parts.'
On the 7th, Gyeonggi Province announced that it requested cooperation from 91 online car parts sellers who labeled or advertised their products as 'genuine parts' to correct the term to 'Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts.'
Earlier, the Gyeonggi Province Fair Trade Continuous Monitoring Team identified 138,000 products sold using the term 'genuine parts' on online portal sites in June and confirmed 91 sellers of these products.
This inspection was carried out following a business agreement signed in May between Gyeonggi Province and Jeollabuk-do to promote certified alternative automotive parts. At that time, Gyeonggi Governor Lee Jae-myung and Jeollabuk-do Governor Song Ha-jin signed a business agreement for win-win cooperation on the 'Automotive Alternative Certified Parts Activation Project' at the Jeonbuk Institute of Automotive Convergence Technology (JIAT) located in Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do.
Certified alternative automotive parts are new products certified by institutions designated by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport as having the same quality and safety level as parts ordered and produced by original car manufacturers, distinguishing them from used or recycled parts.
The price is about 60-65% of that of original car parts. Since Korean GM left Gunsan, Jeollabuk-do has been actively promoting the automotive alternative parts industry centered on remaining parts manufacturers and core R&D personnel.
Governor Lee Jae-myung explained, "When using a car, there will inevitably be times when parts need to be replaced or repaired, but consumers usually pay high prices for parts ordered and produced by original car manufacturers, which burdens household finances. It is meaningful that Gyeonggi Province has joined hands with Jeollabuk-do, which is seeking a breakthrough for the local economy by promoting the use of alternative certified parts that have similar quality to original parts but are cheaper."

Kim Ji-ye, Director of the Gyeonggi Province Fair Trade Bureau, emphasized, "We are promoting the expansion of consumption of certified alternative automotive parts through the production of guides, platform construction, and support for bus and taxi industries, and we plan to urge the Fair Trade Commission to promptly handle reports of labeling and advertising acts using 'genuine parts.' We will do our best to implement policies that guarantee residents' choice and reduce costs."
