President Moon: "Government Leads Low-Carbon Economic Transition... Solar and Wind Power Facilities to Double by 2025" (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in announced that solar and wind power facilities will be expanded more than twice by 2025 compared to the current level to transition to a low-carbon economy.
In his commemorative speech on the 7th at the '2nd Blue Sky Day,' President Moon stated, "The government will take the lead in transitioning to a low-carbon economy and actively support the efforts of the public and businesses."
Blue Sky Day is the first UN commemorative day adopted by the UN in 2019, led by South Korea.
President Moon announced that solar and wind power facilities will be expanded more than twice by 2025 compared to now, and that the potential of renewable energy will be further enhanced through technological innovation, scaling up, and community participation.
He also added, "We will actively support our companies to proactively respond to the new international order, including the carbon border tax."
President Moon proposed taking action toward carbon zero through small daily practices, saying, "If greenhouse gas emissions continue at the current pace, we will regret not acting at this very moment."
He also urged the achievement of carbon neutrality goals. President Moon emphasized, "Last week, we enacted the Carbon Neutrality Basic Act, becoming the fourteenth country to legally define 'carbon neutrality.' This is based on 2018, the year with the highest greenhouse gas emissions, and compared to countries that reached their peak emissions earlier and have been reducing emissions for a long time, it is a much more challenging goal."
He added, " We can do it. Already, over the two years of 2019 and 2020, we reduced carbon emissions by more than 10% compared to 2018. If we all join forces, we can surely achieve the newly set goals."
