Jeonnam National University Yeosu Campus 'SeomSeom Yeosu' Project Receives Praise
Effective Promotion Role for the World Island Expo
[Yeosu=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Shin Kyung-taek] Chonnam National University's ‘Island Explorer Training Project’ is playing a significant role in promoting the 2026 World Island Expo to be held in Yeosu.
The ‘SeomSeom Yeosu’ program, operated by the Fisheries and Aquaculture Research Institute at Chonnam National University Yeosu Campus, allows students from other regions, including international students enrolled at the Yeosu Campus, to directly experience the beauty and value of islands in the Jeonnam region, naturally achieving promotional effects for the World Island Expo.
In fact, this program provided an opportunity in June to explore Geomundo Island, where participants learned about Geomundo’s role in world history and its geographical value during the Enlightenment period by visiting the lighthouse and British military cemetery. In September, participants experienced and promoted the beauty and value of Jeonnam’s islands through visits to Heuksando, a treasure trove of Korea’s marine resources, and Hongdo, a pristine tourist destination. Further explorations of major islands along the southern coast, such as Geumodo, Nangdo, and Yeoja-do, are also planned.
Moreover, prior to the explorations, the National Park Marine Research Center (Director Lee Chang-rae) and the Yeosu Island Research Association (Chairman Park Geun-se) enhance the effectiveness of the island explorations through lectures on the value and history of the islands.
The Yeosu World Island Expo will be held from July 17 to August 16, 2026, at Dolsan Jinmo District and throughout Yeosu City under the theme ‘Islands, Connecting the Sea and the Future.’
Director Choi Sang-deok said, “This program is not simply about touring islands but learning about their historical, geographical, and environmental values, capturing the lives, food, and beautiful scenery of island residents, and promoting these through SNS, naturally positioning the regional university at the forefront of promoting the ‘World Island Expo.’”
