Vaccine Reservations Open for Under 40s
On the morning of the 3rd, citizens are getting tested at the COVID-19 screening clinic set up at Seoul Station Plaza in Jung-gu, Seoul.
On the 3rd of this month, over 230,000 people in South Korea received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in a single day.
According to the COVID-19 Vaccination Response Promotion Team (Promotion Team) on the 4th, the number of new first-dose vaccinations the previous day was 232,236.
As of midnight on that day, the cumulative number of first-dose vaccinations in the country reached 29,877,535, accounting for 58.2% of the total population (51,349,116 as of December last year). The first-dose vaccination rate among those aged 18 and over was recorded at 67.7%.
Breaking down the cumulative first-dose vaccinations by vaccine type: Pfizer had 15,141,490 recipients, AstraZeneca 11,074,155, and Moderna 2,404,723.
The cumulative number of Janssen vaccine recipients was 1,257,167. Since the Janssen vaccine requires only one dose, those vaccinated with Janssen are included in both the first and second dose counts.
The total number of people who have completed both doses increased to 17,482,977, representing 34.0% of the population. Based on the population aged 18 and over, this rate is 39.6%.
Looking at vaccination targets and institutions, including nursing hospitals and care facilities, hospital-level or higher medical institutions, vulnerable facility recipients, military personnel, and those vaccinated at public health centers or other institutions, the first-dose vaccination rate is 99.7%, and the second-dose rate is 86.8%.
The first and second dose vaccination rates at nationwide entrusted medical institutions and vaccination centers were 63.9% and 35.9%, respectively.
As of midnight on that day, the total remaining vaccine doses in South Korea amounted to 13,177,500.
This includes 4,758,800 doses of AstraZeneca, 4,808,200 doses of Pfizer, 3,228,100 doses of Moderna, and 382,400 doses of Janssen.
The number of people vaccinated with leftover vaccines through standby lists managed by medical institutions or social networking service (SNS) applications such as Naver and Kakao increased by 62,502 (26,122 from standby lists and 36,380 from same-day SNS reservations).
As a result, the cumulative number of people vaccinated with leftover vaccines reached 3,884,451.
Currently, four types of vaccines are used for COVID-19 vaccination in South Korea: AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Janssen, and Moderna.
AstraZeneca, Pfizer, and Moderna vaccines require two doses, while the Janssen vaccine requires only one dose.
The interval between the first and second doses varies slightly depending on the vaccine type. For AstraZeneca, the recommended interval is 8 to 12 weeks; for Pfizer, 3 weeks; and for Moderna, 4 weeks.
Meanwhile, for the key target group for vaccinations in the third quarter of this year?those aged 40 and under?additional reservations and vaccinations are currently underway simultaneously.
As of midnight on that day, the reservation rate for the 18 to 49 age group was 72.1%, with 1,187,178 people having made reservations out of a total target population of 14,120,747.
By age group, the reservation rate was highest among those in their 40s at 77.3%, followed by late teens at 72.8%, 20s at 72.6%, and 30s at 65.4%.
Those aged 18 to 49 who have not yet made a reservation can do so until 6 p.m. on the 18th of this month.
The vaccinations for this group have been carried out sequentially since the 26th of last month at nationwide entrusted medical institutions and regional vaccination centers.

Vaccinations using the Pfizer vaccine will continue until the 5th, and for those who make reservations from the 6th to the 12th, most will receive the Pfizer vaccine, although some medical institutions will also use the Moderna vaccine.
