Jeju Coast Guard to Conduct 'Intensive Crackdown on Crimes Infringing on People's Livelihood' Starting from the 6th
[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] The Jeju Regional Coast Guard Agency (Chief Oh Sang-gwon) announced on the 3rd that it will conduct a "Special Crackdown on Crimes Infringing on People’s Livelihood" from the 6th to the 24th, anticipating an increase in seafood consumption ahead of Chuseok.
The main targets of the crackdown include intrusion thefts at village fishing grounds, aquaculture farms, and vessels; human rights violations such as ignoring demands for disembarkation of long-term fishing vessel crew members and forced boarding; advance payment fraud exploiting crew recruitment difficulties; false labeling of seafood origin that disrupts distribution order; and distribution of substandard food products.
During this period, arrests of fugitives will also be carried out, especially as the use of passenger ships and other multi-use vessels increases.
The Jeju Coast Guard plans to mobilize all police forces, including affiliated police stations’ maritime and criminal investigation units and local police posts, to form special task forces targeting local ports and harbors. They will strengthen patrols with criminal mobile boats in vulnerable maritime areas such as village fishing grounds and aquaculture surroundings.
To enhance the effectiveness of the crackdown, information will be shared with the National Fisheries Products Quality Management Service (Jeju Branch), and joint crackdowns will be conducted on offenders involved in origin violations and distribution of substandard food products.
A Jeju Coast Guard official stated, “We will conduct intensive crackdowns on habitual and chronic crimes that harm ordinary citizens ahead of Chuseok, while also considering various circumstances to provide guidance and warnings for livelihood-related crimes. We urge the public to actively report any illegal activities they discover.”
Meanwhile, the Jeju Coast Guard has conducted a total of seven special crackdowns on crimes infringing on people’s livelihood over the past three years (four during Lunar New Year and three during Chuseok), resulting in 176 cases and 207 arrests.
By type, the breakdown is as follows: other special laws (36%), fugitives (21%), advance payment fraud (13%), other criminal law offenses (12%), illegal fishing (7%), human rights violations (6%), and theft (5%).
