[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] KT is joining forces with electronic document companies to develop a blockchain-based electronic document platform.

On the 1st, KT announced that it launched the Electronic Document DX One Team with electronic document specialized companies at the KT Gwanghwamun Building East in Jongno-gu, Seoul, to strengthen ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management and actively promote the electronic document business in line with the revised Electronic Document Act environment.

KT formed the Electronic Document DX One Team to explore digital transformation across many industries based on electronic documents. The team includes a total of 14 companies, including KT, NetKTI, K-One Information & Communication, Stage5, Plan I, Podex, Dongdo System, and plans to expand participating companies.

Leveraging its capabilities as a digital platform company, KT will develop a blockchain-based electronic document platform. This platform manages the entire lifecycle of electronic documents, including creation, storage, distribution, and application, and KT will provide it to the participating companies of the Electronic Document DX One Team.

The participating companies pursue digital transformation optimized for their customers based on electronic documents. NetKTI applies electronic document services to the medical sector, K-One Information & Communication to finance, and Dongdo System to franchises and insurance companies. Plan I aims to apply electronic document services to local governments and mid-sized local companies, while Podex plans to utilize it in distribution solutions. Stage5 will offer electronic contracts and electronic certificates as additional services to its existing offerings. Other partner companies will also promote upselling by integrating electronic document-based paperless services into their main businesses targeting customers.

The primary goal of the Electronic Document DX One Team is to convert 4.5 billion sheets of paper produced annually into electronic documents. Achieving this is estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 1,296 tons and have the effect of planting 30-year-old pine trees on 120 hectares of land. Furthermore, it is expected to contribute to South Korea’s carbon neutrality and securing global competitiveness.

In addition to the activities of the Electronic Document DX One Team, KT is continuously enhancing platform functions as an electronic document platform operator. It launched Electronic Contract 2.0, which improves usability by enabling electronic document editing through web forms and web editors. KT plans to simplify document submission by linking the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s electronic certificates with the PASS app. It also plans to improve security trust levels by integrating blockchain into electronic document storage services.

Since June 2018, KT has led the mobile electronic notification market as a certified official electronic document intermediary by the Ministry of Science and ICT. Last year, KT established the KT Paperless Platform, which allows small and medium-sized enterprises and small business owners to use electronic document services such as electronic contracts and electronic registration on a monthly subscription basis without building separate systems.

Im Chae-hwan, Executive Director of KT AI/DX Platform Business Division, said, “Starting with the Electronic Document DX One Team, KT and its partner companies have secured a major driving force to activate and grow the electronic document market. Going forward, KT will lead digital transformation in other industries using the electronic document platform and take the lead in paperless-based ESG management.”
