Coupang Appoints Lee Yeongsang as Vice President of Legal Affairs
Enhancing Legal Support Capabilities for ESG Management
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] Coupang announced on the 1st that it has appointed Lee Sang-yong, former attorney at law firm Yulchon, as Vice President in charge of legal affairs. Going forward, Vice President Lee will be responsible for overall corporate legal affairs at Coupang, including litigation and dispute resolution.
Before joining Coupang in 2018, Vice President Lee worked as a partner attorney in the litigation division at law firm Yulchon, handling various corporate advisory services such as litigation, corporate criminal law, compliance, and international disputes, as well as legal advisory work related to the recently emerging ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) issues.
Since his appointment as a prosecutor in 2003, he served at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, the Ministry of Justice, and the Blue House, handling special investigations, legal policy, international criminal investigations, and planning tasks. In particular, as an expert in the field of international criminal law, he has been invited as a lecturer at the International Anti-Corruption Academy (IACA) in Austria and has been active internationally.
As an unlisted US company, Coupang requires various decision-making and strategic execution aligned with global standards. From this perspective, Vice President Lee is expected to play a role based on his experience and expertise in corporate criminal law as well as legal work related to ESG, including fair trade, environment, and safety, gained through his career as a prosecutor and attorney.
