According to the local Italian news outlet Milano Today on the 29th (local time), the mixed-use residential and commercial apartment "Torre dei Moro" (Tower of Moro), located on Antonini Street in Milan, caught fire around 5:30 PM and was completely burned down. Torre dei Moro is a 16-story above-ground and 2-story underground building constructed in 2011 as part of the "Milan Restoration Plan."
About 70 households lived in the building, but most were on vacation, and around 20 people were inside at the time of the fire. They inhaled some smoke but all reportedly exited the building safely.
Reports indicate that the fire started on the upper floors, specifically the 15th floor, and spread downward along the building's exterior walls. Fire authorities stated, "The flames spread to the lower floors, producing a lot of smoke."
Despite the dispatch of about 10 fire trucks and ambulances, the flames continued for approximately three hours.
Local authorities declared a state of emergency and dispatched helicopter rescue teams, ambulances, and medical personnel. They also blocked all nearby roads where debris from the building was falling.
Mayor Beppe Sala of Milan said, "It has been confirmed that there are no victims or injuries. The approximately 20 people inside the building left safely," adding, "Firefighters will check each home as a precaution against any unforeseen incidents."
Meanwhile, the exact cause of the fire is still unknown, but local media pointed to "external materials" as a factor behind the building's complete destruction. Milano Today reported, "The flames spread rapidly due to the building's exterior materials made of polystyrene," adding, "Because of this, the building was left 'bare.'"
