Jeonnam Province Strengthens Commitment to Successfully Host the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo
Do-Yeosu City Holds Pan-Provincial Citizen Resolution Rally
[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeonnam Province has reaffirmed its commitment to the successful hosting of the ‘2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo’.
The province announced on the 27th that, together with Yeosu City, it held a pan-provincial resolution rally at Yeosu Culture Hall on the 27th to welcome the confirmation of the ‘2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo’ as an international event and to pledge its determination for a successful hosting.
Under the theme ‘We will definitely achieve the successful hosting of the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo!’, the event was attended by Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, Kwon Oh-bong, Mayor of Yeosu, and others, while Minister of the Interior and Safety Jeon Hae-cheol and Yeosu-area members of the National Assembly delivered congratulatory messages via video.
The event continued with awards for contributors to island development, the delivery of a prayer flag expressing determination for success, the reading of a resolution, and a success performance by the attendees.
Jeonnam Province and Yeosu City live-streamed the event through their official YouTube channel ‘Euddeum Jeonnam Tube’.
The ‘2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo’ will be held from July 17 to August 16, 2026, in the Dolsan Jinmoji area under the theme ‘Connecting Islands, Sea, and Future’.
Expected to attract over 2 million visitors from 30 countries, this event is anticipated to create more than 6,000 jobs and generate an economic ripple effect exceeding 400 billion KRW.
The expo will operate eight permanent exhibition halls, including a theme pavilion conveying the message of islands, sub-pavilions showcasing the future, culture, and ecology of islands, a joint pavilion, an island livelihood culture pavilion, and a marine bridge museum.
Additionally, side events such as Special Days designating one island per day by country and local governments, land-bridge and island-bridge tours, and healing island tours will be held.
Starting with the ‘2021 International Island Forum in Yeosu’ on October 20, the province and Yeosu City plan to continuously hold events related to the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo to foster an international event atmosphere.
Annual pre-events related to islands, such as the World Islands Cities Conference, Youth Island Work Camp, and International Youth Festival, will be regularly held from July to October, and detailed annual implementation plans will be established to accelerate preparations for the main event.
Governor Kim Young-rok said, “Jeonnam Province, which has long recognized the value and importance of islands, has firmly established itself as the leading center for island development in Korea with the hosting of the National Korea Islands Promotion Agency in Mokpo and the confirmation of the 2026 Yeosu World Islands Expo as an international event. Together with Yeosu City, we will successfully host the World Islands Expo to showcase the charm and value of Korean islands to the world and make islands a new growth engine for Korea.”
Mayor Kwon Oh-bong stated, “Through hosting the world’s first islands expo, we will advance Yeosu as a ‘Yeosu in the World’ and enhance the national brand value as a maritime island powerhouse. We ask for the absolute participation and support of citizens for the successful hosting of the Islands Expo.”
