Kang Ki-yoon and Lee Cheol-gyu "Unfair about real estate allegations"... Opposition raises concerns over the fairness of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission investigation
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] On the 26th, Ganggiyun and Lee Cheol-gyu, members of the People Power Party, expressed their grievances regarding the results of the full-scale real estate investigation by the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission and requested reconsideration of the party’s decision to demand their resignation. The People Power Party, while asking the members who were requested to resign in connection with the Commission’s investigation to demonstrate 'Seondang Husa' (placing the party before oneself), also raised issues with the investigation.
On the 26th, Lee Jun-seok, leader of the People Power Party, stated at the party’s Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly, "There have been many difficult decisions, including the stance on real estate issues, and I understand that there may be some disagreements regarding the party’s measures," but added, "The most important thing is for everyone to unite for the presidential election victory and to demonstrate the spirit of Seondang Husa."
At the meeting, Representative Kang and Representative Lee, who were requested to resign by the party’s Supreme Council, attended and voiced their grievances.
Representative Kang claimed, "The problematic orchard land was cultivated together with my father in 1998, and the city forcibly acquired this land, but they say I speculated. It was not that I was told to buy it after the city report; the city forcibly acquired it because it was necessary." He explained that the orchard was purchased for 260 million won, but the city acquired it for 4.5 billion won.
Representative Lee said, "There is an allegation of irregular gifting to my married daughter," and added, "I submitted documents such as income proof of about 400 million won and details of taking over a jeonse (long-term deposit lease) when purchasing an apartment, thinking the matter was clarified, but they say there is still suspicion." He said, "Even though it can be confirmed that there is no issue by sufficiently checking financial transaction information, such measures were not taken, and it is being treated as if there is suspicion within the party." He requested, "Please review it again with objective data."
Heo Eun-ah, chief spokesperson of the People Power Party, expressed regret in a statement, saying, "We cannot help but express regret that the Commission’s investigation deviated from its original purpose," and pointed out, "There are several investigations that deviated from the purpose of clarifying whether high-ranking public officials engaged in improper speculation using public information, and although it was said that real estate acquisitions after 2014 would be investigated, the investigation period applied to opposition party members included years outside the scope, such as 2004 and 2006."
