DL E&C to Build Korea's First 'Zero Carbon Emission' Factory
Daesan Power Biomass Energy Facility Carbon Capture System Order Received
[Asia Economy Reporter Onyu Lim] DL E&C (formerly Daelim Industrial) is undertaking the country's first carbon negative factory construction project. On the 25th, DL E&C announced that it received a letter of intent to award the contract for the construction of a carbon dioxide capture and utilization plant with an annual capacity of 146,000 tons from the client, Daesan Power. The two companies plan to finalize the contract through negotiations within the next two months.
This project involves constructing a carbon capture and utilization plant at the biomass energy facility located in Daesan-eup, Seosan-si, Chungnam, operated by Daesan Power. The biomass energy facility produces energy by burning wood chips as fuel. Biomass is considered a carbon-neutral energy source with no additional carbon emissions. In addition, DL E&C and Daesan Power will install BECCU equipment that captures and utilizes carbon from biomass exhaust gas, realizing carbon negativity for the first time in Korea by making the net carbon dioxide emissions negative beyond carbon neutrality.
The plant can capture 146,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually. After compression and purification processes, it will produce liquid carbon dioxide with 99.9% purity, which will be supplied to domestic carbon dioxide demand sectors such as semiconductor cleaning agents, fire extinguishers, medical supplies, welding materials, and dry ice. Basic design will begin in the fourth quarter of this year, with completion scheduled for the first half of 2023.
This project is especially significant as it utilizes DL E&C's carbon capture technology. DL E&C has been developing related technologies by participating in national carbon capture research projects for over ten years and possesses basic design capabilities for carbon dioxide capture plants. This project will be carried out entirely with DL E&C's technology, from the basic design of the decarbonization plant to performance guarantees. Based on this, the company aims to solidify its position as a total solution provider for carbon dioxide capture and utilization processes, which are emerging as eco-friendly future businesses.
