Sancheong-gun, Long-Awaited Project by Local Residents... Completion of Jeokbyeoksan Piam Tunnel Construction Project
292 Billion KRW Investment to Resolve Residents' Long-Standing Issues
Customized Construction Methods Achieve Budget Savings and Shortened Construction Period
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Soon-kyung] Sancheong-gun, Gyeongnam announced on the 23rd that it has completed the "Jeokbyeoksan Steep Slope Collapse Risk Zone Maintenance Project," a long-awaited project by local residents.
With the completion of this project, the area has been freed from the risk of frequent rockfalls during thawing periods or heavy rains.
In particular, before the project completion, experts evaluated the construction quality and structural safety, receiving a very excellent rating above the evaluation criteria in all categories.
The road below Jeokbyeoksan is used by intercity buses traveling between Sancheong-eup and Jinju, local buses connecting Sinan and Danseong-myeon to Sancheong-eup, and many visitors heading to Jirisan.
However, out of the approximately 700 meters of road, about 500 meters run along the Jeokbyeoksan cliff, which is steep and rugged, nearly 100 meters high, causing frequent rockfall accidents during thawing or heavy rain seasons, resulting in human and material damage.
Especially in the early to mid-2010s, as Sinan-myeon near Jinju became urbanized, vehicle traffic increased, adding to residents' concerns and inconveniences.
To eliminate the risk of rockfalls, the county started the "Jeokbyeoksan Steep Slope Collapse Risk Zone Maintenance Project" in mid-2018 with a total project cost of 29.2 billion KRW, and has now completed it.
The county improved and maintained a total road section of 934 meters, constructed rockfall prevention nets, and built at-grade intersections. Additionally, a 700-meter Piam Tunnel was constructed on the road section below Jeokbyeoksan, along with pedestrian pathways to enhance traffic safety and residents' convenience.

A county official stated, "Since this road is frequently used not only by intercity and local buses but also by local residents' vehicles, the completion of the construction has eliminated the risk of major traffic accidents caused by rockfalls." He added, "Especially due to the geographical characteristics of being close to National Route 3 and Danseong IC, many external visitors heading to Jirisan use this road frequently, so securing safety and smooth vehicle flow is expected to contribute to revitalizing the local economy."
