Maeil Dairies Launches 'Sunfiber Prebiotics' Stick Type
Sunfiber (Guar Gum Hydrolysate) Secures Exclusive Domestic Supply Rights
Only Four-Complex Functional Prebiotics Recognized by MFDS in Korea
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-sun] Maeil Dairies announced on the 23rd that it has launched a stick-type health functional food, 'Sunfiber Prebiotics,' under the Selex brand. The daily recommended amount of 12.5g is individually packaged in stick form for convenient consumption.
'Sunfiber' is not a general dietary fiber but a health functional food ingredient recognized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety called 'guar gum hydrolysate.' Maeil Dairies has secured exclusive domestic supply rights for Sunfiber. Although this ingredient is not well known in Korea, it is used in the US and Europe to supplement diets low in fiber and high in fat. Currently, about 90% of the guar gum hydrolysate production is consumed in the US and European markets.
Guar gum hydrolysate is a 100% plant-based prebiotic made by hydrolyzing only the endosperm part, the nutrient storage of guar beans grown in the northern Indian desert, to make it easy to consume and dissolve. It is a safe functional ingredient that has obtained various international certifications such as the US FDA's Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) certification, vegan certification, European ESPEN, and recommended intake by Japan's Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. It is also known as a representative low-FODMAP health ingredient due to its low FODMAP (short-chain carbohydrates) index.
The biggest feature of the 'Selex Sunfiber Prebiotics' product is that it is the only quadruple functional prebiotic recognized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in Korea. The Ministry recognizes four functions of guar gum hydrolysate: promoting the growth of beneficial intestinal bacteria, facilitating bowel movements, improving blood cholesterol, and suppressing postprandial blood sugar rise.
A Maeil Dairies official explained, "For the most important gut health, which holds more than 70% of immune cells in our body, it is important to consume prebiotics that serve as food for beneficial bacteria. The newly introduced Sunfiber Prebiotics can help not only those suffering from bowel and intestinal discomfort but also people who need to improve cholesterol and postprandial blood sugar."
The newly launched stick-type product will be available from 5 p.m. today (August 23) on Kakao Makers and will be sold at a special open price for one week. It will also be introduced on NS Home Shopping on the 31st.
