Typhoon 'Omais' Crisis Alert 'Caution'... Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasure Headquarters Activated at Level 1
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Seon-ae] Emergency Level 1 has been activated in response to Typhoon No. 12 'Omais.'
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that as Typhoon No. 12 'Omais' moves northward toward the Korean Peninsula, the typhoon crisis alert has been raised from 'Interest' to 'Caution' as of 11 a.m. on the 22nd, and the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCH) has activated Emergency Level 1 for preemptive response.
The crisis alert levels progress in the order of Interest - Caution - Warning - Severe, and the CDSCH emergency response levels increase from Level 1 to Level 3.
The Korea Meteorological Administration expects the typhoon to enter the sea south-southwest of Seogwipo on the morning of the 23rd, pass south of Gwangju in the evening of the same day, make landfall near the southern coast overnight, and then transform into an extratropical cyclone by dawn on the 24th, moving out to the sea northeast of Ulleungdo.
Accordingly, the CDSCH will hold an emergency countermeasure meeting with relevant ministries and local governments in the afternoon to review the expected typhoon path, impact range, and key response measures.
At the meeting, they plan to preemptively control areas vulnerable to landslides, underground passages, and frequently flooded zones where human casualties are a concern, and thoroughly inspect the operation and any abnormalities of drainage facilities such as dams, reservoirs, sewage pipes, and drainage pump stations.
They will also consider preemptive evacuation of vessels engaged in fishing, safety measures at construction and industrial sites, damage prevention plans for COVID-19 vaccination centers and temporary screening clinics, and quarantine measures at evacuation facilities in case of disaster victims.
