Afghan President's Family Who Fled with Money Living Luxuriously in New York
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Jae-hee] It has been revealed that Mariam Ghani, the daughter of Ashraf Ghani, the former Afghan president who fled overseas with a large amount of cash after the Taliban took control and abandoned the people, is living a comfortable life as an artist and filmmaker in the United States.
According to the New York Post on the 17th (local time), Mariam Ghani (42), the daughter of former President Ghani, is enjoying a free life as a visual artist and film producer in New York.
The New York Post reported that they attempted to interview Mariam at her luxury home in Brooklyn, but she did not respond to the inquiry.
When the Taliban took over Afghanistan, former President Ghani fled abroad on the 16th by helicopter carrying cash.
His sudden escape made smooth negotiations for a peaceful transfer of power difficult, and criticism has arisen as he left behind the terrified people with the Taliban’s return.
On the 16th, after the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, Mariam posted on social media (SNS), "I feel sad, scared, and angry when I think of the family, friends, and colleagues left in Afghanistan," adding, "I am doing everything I can for them."
She also mentioned ways to help Afghan residents, such as sending letters to U.S. government officials and donating to organizations that assist refugees.
There was no particular mention of the hardships Afghan women face or of her father. Recently, she has not made any public comments about her father’s actions.
The media reported that it is unclear whether Mariam has heard from her father or knows his whereabouts.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Mariam was born to her father and a Lebanese-American mother and grew up in Maryland.
She later studied at New York University and the School of Visual Arts (SVA), and began building her career as an artist around the time her father started working in the Afghan government in 2002.
Since then, her works have been exhibited at world-renowned museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Tate Modern in the UK. In 2018, she joined the faculty at Bennington College in Vermont.
