‘2023 World Senior Badminton Championships’ to be Held in Jeonju!

[Jeonju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Han-ho] In August 2023, the World Senior Badminton Championships, a grand festival for badminton enthusiasts worldwide, will be held in Jeonju.

On the 18th, Jeonju Mayor Kim Seung-su, Korea Badminton Association President Kim Taek-gyu, and Jeonbuk Badminton Association President Shim Yong-hyun signed an agreement to successfully host the "2023 Jeonju World Senior Badminton Championships."

Hosted by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and organized by Jeonju City, the Korea Badminton Association, and the Jeonbuk Badminton Association, this event is the largest badminton festival in a festival format, with over 5,000 participants from 50 countries worldwide, including top badminton players and their families.

Notably, this is the first time the tournament will be held in Korea.

The tournament is scheduled to take place over 10 days in August 2023 at an indoor gymnasium, with the exact dates to be decided in consultation with the Badminton World Federation.

The competition will feature five events across nine age categories: men's team, women's team, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles.

Jeonju City expects to achieve a direct regional economic revitalization effect of more than 7.4 billion KRW through hosting this event.

Additionally, since an international broadcasting distributor will distribute the tournament to 50 countries worldwide, it is expected to have a significant indirect promotional effect in introducing Jeonju as a tourism hub city to the world.

Jeonju Mayor Kim Seung-su said, "As Jeonju is widely recognized as a sacred place for badminton, we will make every effort to prepare the event to ensure it is the most successful tournament." He added, "We will do our best not only to provide excellent competition infrastructure but also to establish tourism conditions and hospitality services so that badminton heroes and enthusiasts from over 50 countries can cherish Jeonju in their hearts."

Meanwhile, the World Senior Badminton Championships have been held biennially since 2011 in Vancouver, Canada; 2013 in Ankara, Turkey; 2015 in Helsingborg, Sweden; 2017 in Kochi, Kerala, India; and 2019 in Katowice, Poland. The tournament originally scheduled for November this year in Huelva, Spain, was postponed to next year due to the impact of COVID-19.
