84 Billion KRW Supported in 5 Fields to Promote Utilization of Public Research Outcomes
Ministry of Science and ICT to Hold Meeting on the 13th... Full-Scale Promotion of R&D Projects
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 13th that it will actively promote the 'Public Research Outcome Utilization Promotion Research and Development (R&D)' project to connect excellent research outcomes developed by public research institutions with companies for commercialization.
To this end, the Ministry of Science and ICT has selected intermediary research groups for five core technology fields and will support a total government R&D budget of approximately 8.4 billion KRW over the next three years. Specifically, this project supports intermediary research that advances the technology readiness level tailored to corporate demand to rapidly commercialize excellent basic and core research results from universities and government-funded research institutes, facilitating technology transfer and commercialization of public research outcomes.
The Ministry mainly supports basic and core research, but since most of the generated research outcomes (technology readiness level 4 or below) need further follow-up support to mature (technology readiness level 7 or above) for commercialization, there is a need for intermediate-stage support to bridge the gap between public research outcomes and market demand. This refers to research that discovers laboratory ideas with commercial potential and commercializes them according to market demand.
To this end, the Ministry of Science and ICT has organized five intermediary research groups in areas including microalgae cell factories, nanotechnology-based bio and electronic component materials, semiconductor analog batch design automation, green hydrogen production, and diagnostic-therapeutic technology convergence.
At the 'Public Research Outcome Commercialization Promotion Measures Meeting' held under the chairmanship of Yong Hong-taek, 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, the heads of the five intermediary research groups, representatives of demand companies, commercialization experts, and the president of the Science and Technology Job Promotion Agency participated and exchanged various opinions on mutual cooperation measures between companies and public institutions necessary to promote public research technology commercialization.
