[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] A man in his 20s who stabbed and killed his older sister and then abandoned her body in an agricultural waterway on Seokmodo Island, Ganghwa-gun, was sentenced to 30 years in prison.
The 12th Criminal Division of the Incheon District Court (Chief Judge Kim Sang-woo) sentenced Yoon Mo (27), who was detained on charges of murder and corpse abandonment, to 30 years in prison on the 12th.
The court stated, "Life is a fundamental value that the state and society must protect, and acts that violate this cannot be tolerated. Since the crime was committed against a family member, severe social and moral criticism is inevitable. The defendant killed the victim with a weapon and showed behavior devoid of any minimum humanity while abandoning the body. The victim was left in a cold agricultural waterway for four months without returning to the family," it said.
It continued, "Although the defendant later confessed, it was not out of remorse but because the investigative agency presented objective evidence, making further denial meaningless," the court ruled.
However, the court explained the sentencing reasoning by saying, "Considering that Yoon is remorseful and that the parents, who suffered the greatest mental damage, earnestly requested leniency."
Yoon is accused of stabbing his sister, who was in her 30s, more than 30 times with a weapon at an apartment in Namdong-gu, Incheon, around 2:50 a.m. on December 19 last year, killing her, placing her body in a suitcase, leaving it in the apartment rooftop storage for ten days, and then using a rental car to abandon the body in an agricultural waterway on Seokmodo Island, Samsan-myeon, Ganghwa-gun, Incheon.
Investigations revealed that after the crime, Yoon inserted the victim’s phone SIM card into another phone and exchanged messages as if she were alive, and used mobile banking to withdraw money from the victim’s account.
Meanwhile, the prosecution demanded a life sentence at the sentencing hearing held on the 13th of last month, stating that Yoon showed no remorse, traveling with his girlfriend after killing and abandoning his sister.

The prosecution stated, "Yoon stabbed his sister multiple times with such force that the tip of the weapon broke. Considering his behavior after the crime, such as going on a trip with his girlfriend five days after the incident, it is doubtful that he felt any remorse. Given the victim’s resentment after being left on the cold bottom of the agricultural waterway, Yoon must be severely punished," explaining the reason for the prosecution’s demand.
