Park Beom-gye's 'Economic Moves': Will He Become a 'Variable' in Lee Jae-yong's Steps After Parole?
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] The course of action for Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, who will be released on parole on the 13th, is effectively controlled by Minister of Justice Park Beom-gye.
If Vice Chairman Lee's side requests a review by the Special Economic Crimes Management Committee to lift the employment restrictions, Minister Park must convene the committee. The committee, composed of 10 members including the Vice Minister of Justice as the chairperson, discusses and reaches a conclusion, which is then conveyed back to Minister Park, who makes the final decision on whether to lift the employment restrictions.
While parole was a matter where the relevant review committee under the Ministry of Justice made a conclusion and Minister Park merely approved it, the approval for employment is entirely his prerogative. On the morning of the 12th, Minister Park told reporters on his way to work that Vice Chairman Lee "will need deep reflection." This was interpreted as meaning he should contemplate his role after release and contribute to society. Regarding the previous day’s remarks by Sohn Kyung-shik, Chairman of the Korea Employers Federation, who suggested that Deputy Prime Minister for Economy Hong Nam-ki requested Minister Park to accommodate Vice Chairman Lee, Park said, "I have not heard anything." He also refrained from commenting on employment approval, saying, "I have not considered it yet."

Some in the business community interpret Minister Park’s series of ‘economic activities’ as potentially influencing the decision on Vice Chairman Lee’s employment approval. On the 9th, Minister Park engaged in significant economic-related activities within a three-hour span. At 3 p.m., he met with Wolfgang Angerholzer, the Austrian Ambassador to Korea, emphasizing exchange and cooperation on policies supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and startups. He also pledged support to help Korea adopt Austria’s know-how in growing the economy centered on SMEs. Then, at 6:40 p.m., he announced the parole of Vice Chairman Lee and others. He expressed hope that "this Liberation Day commemorative parole will help overcome our economic crisis." Minister Park’s mediation in the ‘LawTalk incident’ and his promise of active legal support for startup companies are also economic issues. A Ministry of Justice official said, "Minister Park has a strong interest in economic matters." It is said that he often discusses economic issues during meals with Ministry staff and pays close attention to the economy section when reading newspapers. Minister Park also wrote in the introduction of his social media (SNS) Facebook account, "Interested in clearing deep-rooted evils and issues of livelihood."
