[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] Geoje City, Gyeongnam Province announced on the 11th that the Ilun, Dundeok, Yeoncho, and Hacheong Chung Hon Cemeteries and the Jangseungpo Joint Military-Police Cemetery were designated as 'Nationally Managed Cemeteries' on the 28th of last month.
The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs amended the "Act on the Establishment and Operation of National Cemeteries" in September last year to designate joint cemeteries where independence patriots and national merit recipients are buried outside of national cemeteries as nationally managed cemeteries, aiming to manage them at a level equivalent to national cemeteries.
Accordingly, the city investigated the cemetery registers and related materials of the Chung Hon Cemeteries within its jurisdiction and submitted a designation request for the above five cemeteries as 'Nationally Managed Cemeteries.'
The city achieved the result of having all five sites designated.
This is the third designation nationwide and the first in Gyeongnam Province, following the first designated Nationally Managed Cemetery in Suyu, Seoul, and the second in Sagok, Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, making these the third to seventh designated cemeteries.
The five designated Nationally Managed Cemeteries will be transferred under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs and managed by the Eastern Gyeongnam Veterans Office.
