Seoul History Compilation Institute Recruits 100 Students for Online Travel Course 'World City Guide'
A 15-Week Non-Face-to-Face Program on Seoul's Past, Present, and Future Vision and Its Resemblance to Global Cities
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul History Compilation Center, which has been offering free public lectures on Seoul history every year in the first and second half since 2004, announced on the 6th that it will recruit 100 students.
The lecture series was planned under the theme of "World City Guide" to explore world cities that resemble yet differ from Seoul’s past, present, and future vision. The lectures will be held every Friday for 2 hours each, from the 27th until December 10th, spanning 15 sessions.
The lectures are structured to compare Seoul with various world cities by theme. Cities resembling Seoul’s past such as Beijing, Hanoi, and Taipei will be examined, along with cities living with cultural heritage like Rome, and Paris, a city innovating based on 2,000 years of history.
Additionally, Tokyo will be studied from the perspective of the Olympics and urban growth, and a comparison will be made between Seoul’s "Teheran-ro" and Tehran in Iran. The lectures will also cover cities related to Seoul’s future aspirations, including London, the originator of double-decker buses and city tours, cultural regeneration in Dresden and Bilbao, and Singapore as a model of multiethnicity and multiculturalism. Other cities featured include Stockholm in Sweden for welfare, the "green city" Curitiba in Brazil, Cairo in Egypt, and Washington D.C. in the United States.
This lecture series is not a simple city description but a world city journey with themes to find similarities and differences with Seoul. Considering the spread of COVID-19, the lectures can be attended from home and will be conducted via interactive online video conferencing (Zoom).
