It has been 560 days since the first confirmed case was reported on January 20 last year. According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters, as of midnight on the 2nd, the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases increased by 1,219 from the previous day, reaching a total of 200,102. The number of locally transmitted cases rose by 1,150, totaling 188,982. Imported cases exceeded 12,000, accounting for 6% of the total confirmed cases in the country.
The daily new confirmed cases have recorded four digits for 27 consecutive days, and the cumulative number of cases surged by 50,000 in just over a month and a half since mid-June. It took 336 days to reach the first 50,000 cases since the first COVID-19 patient was reported domestically, then 94 days to reach 100,000, and 85 days to reach 150,000, indicating a significantly faster spread. In particular, the spread of the highly transmissible Delta variant, accumulated fatigue from prolonged quarantine measures, and the seasonal factor of the summer vacation period combined to add 41,384 new cases last month alone.
