Wando-gun Establishes and Implements Detailed Measures for Five Major Climate Change Risk Factors by Sector
[Wando=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Choi Kyungpil] Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 29th that it will establish a detailed implementation plan for summer climate change adaptation measures based on the Korea Meteorological Administration's short- and long-term forecasts, its own climate analysis, and expert opinions, and will make every effort to minimize damage to residents' lives and property.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration's forecast, since the heatwave advisory was issued on the 19th, hot weather above 30.5℃ has continued, and a heat dome phenomenon covering the upper atmosphere with hot air is expected to appear.
In particular, if there are no variables such as typhoons, the heatwave and tropical nights are expected to continue until August.
The high water temperature advisory for the western inner sea and coastal areas of the South Sea issued on the 23rd is about 20 days earlier than the advisory issued on August 14 last year, and as of the 25th, the water temperature in Wando and Gunoe was 26.7℃, which is 4.7℃ higher than the average temperature.
Due to the influence of typhoons and cold fronts, there may be fluctuations such as temporary drops in water temperature in the West Sea, South Sea, and Jeju waters, but along with the scorching heat, a rise in water temperature (0.5 to 1℃) is expected due to the decrease in the scale of the Tsushima Current and the cold water mass in the western South Sea area, raising concerns about damage to marine products.
Accordingly, the county established and has been implementing sector-specific measures for the five major climate change risk factors?typhoons, high water temperature, red tides, abnormal algae blooms, and heavy rainfall?in June.
The main contents include strengthening surveillance of high water temperature, low salinity fountains, and red tides; reinforcing and improving marine cage aquaculture facilities; enhancing health management for vulnerable groups such as elderly living alone; operating heatwave shelters; securing safety of facilities vulnerable to typhoons and heavy rainfall; focused surveillance and control of crop pests and livestock diseases; and measures to secure drinking water in island areas, all of which will be further strengthened and promoted.
The county has been striving to respond to climate change by inviting experts in marine fisheries, ecosystems, water, agriculture, and forestry to discuss climate change response measures and discover new projects, analyzing seasonal weather forecasts, and holding sector-specific response forums, and plans to continue proactive responses through climate change analysis.
Governor Shin Woo-cheol said, “As weather forecasts are rapidly changing due to recent atmospheric instability causing changes in temperature and precipitation, we will closely monitor forecasts and observe changes in summer climate change patterns in our region to build a foundation for faster and more effective responses.”
