He especially raised his voice of criticism toward the Moon Jae-in administration, saying, "I cannot help but ask whether there is a will to protect the freedom and peace of the Republic of Korea."
On this day, Choi visited the UN Forces crematorium in Yeoncheon, Gyeonggi Province in the morning and made these remarks. July 27 is the anniversary of the Korean War armistice and UN Forces Participation Day.
When asked by reporters about his thoughts on the restoration of the inter-Korean direct communication line, Choi replied, "I think it is ultimately a means to prevent sudden misunderstandings and clashes between the South and the North and to maintain peace between them."
He continued, "Peace is not achieved by words alone. Especially, it is not due to Kim Jong-un's goodwill," and emphasized, "I believe we must have the ability to maintain peace on our own."
He also said, "Didn’t everyone see the inter-Korean liaison office being brutally blown up? Regarding the situation where our public official was shot dead by North Korean soldiers in the waters off the West Sea, this government did not even properly protest," and added, "I cannot help but ask whether the government truly has the will to protect the life, freedom, and peace of the Republic of Korea."
Then Choi said, "Peace is not maintained by words. It is maintained by will and capability," and stated, "I will create a government that protects peace with capability and will."
Regarding the direction of North Korea policy, Choi explained, "It is important to continue dialogue without misunderstandings," and added, "We must practically draw out North Korea’s will for peace, and at the same time, think about what the true meaning of peace is, speak up about the human rights of North Korean residents, and be able to induce peaceful unification in the long term."
