[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Lee Chang-woo, Mayor of Dongjak-gu (photo), has attracted attention by enacting the first Youth Day ordinance in Seoul.
Born in 1970, Lee, the youngest among the 25 district mayors along with Chae Hyun-il, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, announced on the 26th that he enacted and promulgated the 'Dongjak-gu Youth Day' ordinance on July 15 to create a social culture where youth receive active interest and protection from the local community for the first time in Seoul.
This ordinance designates the last Saturday of May every year as Youth Day to raise the active and autonomous sense of ownership among youth and to foster an atmosphere where Dongjak-gu residents participate in youth development.
To commemorate Youth Day, the first week of the last week of May is set as Youth Week. Youth refers to persons aged 9 to 24 according to the Youth Basic Act.
To celebrate Youth Day, the ordinance stipulates holding cultural and artistic events and awarding exemplary youth, and supports benefits such as admission and usage fee discounts for youth activity facilities.
On Youth Day, not only youth of Dongjak-gu but all youth can use youth activity facilities in the area (▲6 youth reading rooms ▲2 youth cultural centers, etc.) free of charge.
The mayor said, "Through the enactment of this ordinance, we expect it to serve as a foundation for supporting youth activities, improving social conditions and environments to be beneficial to youth, and creating an atmosphere where youth can grow in a balanced way."
In March, the district was selected for the ‘Youth Participation Activity Activation Project’ hosted by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, and is currently promoting the ‘Dongjak-gu Youth Participation Activity Activation Model Project’ until November this year to enhance youth capabilities by encouraging them to take interest in local issues and discover and implement policy agendas on their own.
