View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Tae-min] The total cumulative number of COVID-19 cases among athletes and related personnel participating in the Tokyo Olympics has increased by 17, bringing the total to 123.
The Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee announced on the 24th that 17 additional infections were confirmed, including one athlete. Among these, excluding the athlete, 14 are contractors commissioned by the organizing committee, and 2 are event officials. One of the two event officials was staying in the Olympic Village. Since the organizing committee began tracking and announcing COVID-19 cases on the 1st, the total cumulative number of confirmed cases has risen to 123.
Christophe Dubi, IOC Olympic Director, warned that athletes or event officials not wearing masks will face strict sanctions. In an interview with Kyodo News, Director Dubi stated, “We will take action when there is intolerable behavior regarding mask-wearing.”
Some athletes entering the opening ceremony the previous day were caught on TV cameras without wearing masks, causing controversy.
