[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] Hanssem, the No. 1 furniture company in Korea, recorded its highest-ever sales in the second quarter of this year, fueled by the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic and the booming trend of indoor interior design and home decoration.
Hanssem announced on the 23rd that its consolidated sales for the second quarter of this year reached 568.7 billion KRW, a 9.6% increase compared to the same period last year. This also represents a 2.8% increase compared to the first quarter of this year.
Hanssem stated, "Despite cost burdens due to rising raw material prices, operating profit (27.6 billion KRW) increased by 22% compared to the same period last year, driven by increased sales in the remodeling sector."
Looking at sales by business segment, remodeling led the overall performance with sales of 238.2 billion KRW, up 24.6% year-on-year.
Furniture and household goods sales increased by 7.0% to 167.1 billion KRW. Offline sales rose 5.3% to 101.5 billion KRW, while online sales grew 10.4% to 65.6 billion KRW.
Other segments such as special sales and material sales in the business-to-business (B2B) sector recorded sales of 107.9 billion KRW (-0.8%), and other areas including Hanssem Nexus posted sales of 55.5 billion KRW (-12.4%).
Hanssem’s remodeling business is divided into 'Rehouse,' a total interior construction service, and 'Kitchen & Bath,' specializing in kitchen and bathroom remodeling.
Among these, Rehouse sales increased by 31.9% year-on-year to 178.7 billion KRW, proving the interior boom influenced by COVID-19. Kitchen & Bath sales rose 7.0% to 59.5 billion KRW.
Hanssem explained, "Although apartment transactions in the second quarter of this year decreased by 13.2% year-on-year to 60,449 units, the number of direct construction package sets increased by 164% to 2,138."
They added, "The success was due to diversifying interior package products this year and significantly increasing the number of construction technicians in preparation for rising demand."
Hanssem announced, "In the second half of the year, we will increase the number of nationwide Rehouse standard stores from the current 29 to 50 and expand the design consultation staff at dealerships from 2,500 to 3,500, aiming to secure 5,000 Rehouse orders per month."
