Government "Sharing Animal Testing Data for COVID-19 Vaccines and Treatments"
Yong Hong-taek, 1st Vice Minister of Science and ICT, Revealed on the 23rd
To Be Opened at National Bio Data Station
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-su] The government will share experimental data from mouse models previously used to promote the development of treatments and vaccines for the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
Yong Hong-taek, the 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, announced this on the morning of the 23rd during a visit to the National Mouse Phenotyping Center located on the Seoul National University Gwanak Campus. Vice Minister Yong added that this data will be shared on the National Bio Data Station currently under construction.
At the event, Vice Minister Yong explained, "We will secure big data that can support preclinical (experiments conducted on animals before human clinical trials) testing for new and mutant infectious diseases to enable early response to bio-disasters."
The National Bio Data Station is a platform for collecting and sharing bio-research data, promoted as part of the Digital New Deal policy, and will begin pilot operation in October. Since the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak, the Mouse Center has been providing mouse models infected with COVID-19 free of charge to preclinical testing institutions to support the development of treatments and vaccines. Since August last year, it has supported preclinical trials for COVID-19 treatments and vaccines at 38 institutions and is building related data with the consent of participating organizations.
