China's Invasion of Tibet in 1950 and Tibet's Annexation in 1951
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] Chinese President Xi Jinping inspected the Tibet Autonomous Region. President Xi's visit to Tibet took place amid increasing pressure on the United States regarding human rights issues in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
China's state-run Xinhua News Agency reported on the 23rd that President Xi visited Linzhi City in the Tibet Autonomous Region on the morning of the 21st.
Xinhua reported that President Xi inspected the ecological environment, including rivers around Linzhi City. Afterwards, he visited the city planning office, villages, and parks in Linzhi City, and also checked the urban development plans and rural revitalization status in Tibet.
On the 22nd, President Xi traveled by train to Lhasa, during which he also inspected the progress of railway construction. He received reports from officials about the status of railway construction while on the train.
President Xi's visit to Tibet comes as the Chinese Communist Party marks its 100th anniversary on July 1st, promoting the "great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," and appears to be a demonstration to both domestic and international audiences that China will not back down on key issues such as Tibet, Xinjiang, Hong Kong, and Taiwan in the face of the United States.
Xinhua News Agency published a brief article on President Xi's Tibet visit along with eight photographs. Several photos showed ethnic minorities dressed in traditional Tibetan clothing warmly welcoming President Xi.
The Chinese government considers Xinjiang, Tibet, Hong Kong, and Taiwan as core interests of China and emphasizes that it will never yield on these core interests.
China invaded Tibet in October 1950 and annexed it by signing the "Agreement on Measures for the Peaceful Liberation of Tibet (17-Point Agreement)" on May 23, 1951.
