US-Japan-South Korea Deputy Foreign Ministers Reaffirm Usefulness of Trilateral Cooperation...Agree on Importance of Dialogue and Engagement with North Korea
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The deputy foreign ministers of South Korea, the United States, and Japan held a deputy foreign ministers' meeting in Tokyo for the first time in four years, agreeing on the importance of dialogue and engagement regarding the Korean Peninsula issue and reaffirming the utility of trilateral cooperation among the three countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that Choi Jong-geon, First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Korea, held the 8th Korea-US-Japan Deputy Foreign Ministers' Meeting on the 21st in Tokyo, Japan, with Wendy R. Sherman, US Deputy Secretary of State, and Takeo Mori, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan, reaffirming the usefulness of trilateral cooperation.
At the meeting, shared interests among the three countries, including the Korean Peninsula issue and regional and global situations, were discussed.
As a result of the meeting, the deputy foreign ministers of the three countries agreed on the importance of dialogue and engagement for the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and the establishment of lasting peace, and decided to continue diplomatic efforts to advance the current situation.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to trilateral cooperation for regional engagement under the consensus that peace, stability, and prosperity in the region are common interests of the three countries, shared deep concerns about the situation in Myanmar, and agreed to cooperate for a swift resolution of the crisis.
The deputy foreign ministers of South Korea, the United States, and Japan also agreed to continue seeking future-oriented and mutually beneficial cooperation based on shared values in responding to global issues beyond the region, such as climate change and health.
The three deputy foreign ministers agreed to meet regularly in the future to maintain close communication.

This deputy foreign ministers' meeting was held for the first time in four years since October 2017, coinciding with Deputy Secretary Sherman’s visit. After arriving in Korea on the 21st, Deputy Secretary Sherman will carry out a three-day schedule and hold the Korea-US Deputy Foreign Ministers' Strategic Dialogue on the 23rd.
