BTS's Only Rival Is BTS... New Song 'Permission to Dance' Tops Billboard Chart (Comprehensive)
Passing the Baton from Former No.1 Song 'Butter'
Five Billboard No.1 Hits in 10 Months...Shortest Period Since Michael Jackson
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] The group BTS has once again topped the main US Billboard singles chart with their new song. Taking over the baton from their previous number one hit "Butter," BTS has set a remarkable record by producing five Billboard number one songs in just 10 months.
On the 19th (local time), Billboard announced that BTS's third English single, "Permission to Dance," reached number one on the main singles chart, the "Hot 100."
The Hot 100 ranks songs based on digital downloads, physical album sales, streaming numbers, and radio airplay, and is regarded as the most prestigious chart category on Billboard.
Released on the 9th of this month, "Permission to Dance" dethroned "Butter," which had held the Hot 100 number one spot for seven consecutive weeks, to claim the top position. As a result, BTS now has two songs in the Billboard singles chart top 10.
According to Billboard, "Permission to Dance" recorded 15.9 million streams, 1.1 million radio listeners, and 141,000 digital downloads in the week following its release on the 9th.
This marks the first time in three years, since Drake in July 2018, that an artist has achieved consecutive number one hits with a follow-up single.
"Butter," which ceded the top spot to "Permission to Dance," ranked seventh.
Achieving a number one follow-up single after a previous number one hit on the Billboard singles chart is considered a monumental feat only accomplished by the most popular pop stars at their peak.
On the "Digital Song Sales" chart, BTS took first place, and on the streaming chart, they ranked eighth. This marks BTS's eighth number one on the Digital Song Sales chart, the most held by any group artist worldwide.
With "Permission to Dance" topping the Billboard singles chart, BTS now holds five number one songs: "Dynamite," the remix of "Savage Love" (featuring participation), "Life Goes On," "Butter," and "Permission to Dance."
This achievement came just 10 months after their first number one with "Dynamite" at the end of August last year, making it the shortest period since the "King of Pop" Michael Jackson.
Michael Jackson placed five songs from his "Bad" album at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 over a period of 9 months and 2 weeks between 1987 and 1988.
BTS has also achieved the feat of debuting four songs?"Dynamite," "Life Goes On," "Butter," and "Permission to Dance"?directly at number one on the Hot 100, Billboard reported.
This ranks them fourth after Ariana Grande (5 songs), Justin Bieber (4 songs), and Drake (4 songs).
"Permission to Dance," included on the single CD with "Butter," features songwriting participation from world-renowned British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran.
