Last Year, Barley and Garlic Production Decreased... Onion Increased by 35%
Announcement of the 2021 Barley, Garlic, and Onion Production Survey Results on the 19th
[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] Last year, barley consumption decreased and garlic prices fell, leading to a reduction in production. On the other hand, onion production increased due to rising prices.
Statistics Korea announced the '2021 Barley, Garlic, and Onion Production Survey Results' on the 19th. According to the statistics, barley production in 2021 was 128,869 tons, a decrease of 14,800 tons (10.3%) compared to the previous year. Garlic production also dropped to 308,532 tons this year, down 15.1% (54,900 tons) from the previous year. The decrease was largely due to a 2.1% reduction in yield per 10a caused by low temperatures in January, as well as a 13.3% decrease in cultivation area compared to the previous year influenced by last year's price decline.

In contrast, onion production increased to 1,576,756 tons this year, up 35.0% (408,529 tons) from last year. The reduction in damage led to a 7.3% increase in yield per 10a, and the cultivation area expanded by 25.8% compared to the previous year due to last year's price rise, resulting in an overall increase in production, according to Statistics Korea.
