In this personnel reshuffle, 12 out of 21 police chiefs in the Jeonnam region were replaced. Notably, following the 75th Wando Police Chief (Colonel Choi Sookhee) and the 76th Gokseong Police Chief (Colonel Kim Namhee), Colonel Go Eunkyung was appointed as the 80th Hwasun Police Chief, forming a trio of three female police chiefs at frontline police stations, drawing attention.
Choi Sookhee, Wando Police Chief, hails from Boseong, Jeonnam. She completed her doctoral coursework at Inha University and joined the police force in 1988 through the general recruitment exam. She has served as the head of the Women and Youth Division at Anyang Dongan Police Station in Gyeonggi Province and as the head of the Child Division at the National Police Agency. She is especially specialized in the women and youth sector, leading efforts to eliminate safety blind spots and establish social safety nets to protect socially vulnerable groups such as those in island regions, women, and the disabled.
Kim Namhee, Gokseong Police Chief, is from Goheung, Jeonnam. She graduated from Gwangju Donga Girls' High School and Dongshin University with a master's degree in Police Administration. She joined the police force in 1987 through the general recruitment exam and has served as the head of the Investigation Division at Gwangju Bukbu Police Station and the head of the Criminal Division at Gwangju Dongbu Police Station. As an expert in investigations, she is dedicated to building a responsible investigation system that is well-received through strengthening education capacity in the first year of the implementation of investigative authority adjustment and the autonomous police system.
Go Eunkyung, Hwasun Police Chief, is from Naju, Jeonnam. She graduated from Naju High School and Chosun University with a degree in Computer Science. After joining the police in 2002 as part of the 50th class of the police academy, she has served as the head of the Women and Youth Division at the Jeonnam Police Agency and as the head of the Public Safety Division at Naju Police Station, demonstrating diverse achievements across all areas of policing. She plans to create ▲ a Hwasun Police that leads in protecting socially vulnerable groups ▲ a confident Hwasun Police recognized by residents ▲ and a Hwasun Police that communicates and harmonizes.
Since the opening of the Jeonnam Police Agency, this is the first time that three female colonels, known as the "flower of the police," are serving as police chiefs. This aligns with the recent trend of expanding women's participation in various fields, and the role of female police officers, who are sensitive and meticulous in protecting socially vulnerable groups, is highly anticipated in the security sector.
Moreover, placing female police officers as field security leaders in a police organization traditionally dominated by a male-centered organizational culture is seen as a meaningful personnel move that is expected to bring a fresh breeze within the organization.
