"Stole Money"... Mother Who Beat Teenage Son for 5 Hours Receives Fine and Probation
[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-seop] A mother in her 50s who beat her teenage son for five hours was sentenced to a fine with a suspended sentence.
Judge Kim Iseul of the Incheon District Court Criminal Division 11 announced that A (58), who was indicted for violating the Child Welfare Act, was sentenced to a fine of 3 million won with a two-year suspended sentence, probation, and ordered to attend 40 hours of child abuse recidivism prevention lectures.
A was charged with assaulting her son B (14) with a wooden spatula on his head and calves for about five hours at their home in Namdong-gu, Incheon, in February last year. It was investigated that A woke B, who was sleeping, and beat him, saying "Confess honestly," after noticing that cash kept at home was missing.
Judge Kim said, "A claims that she did not hit the child for five hours straight or that the corporal punishment was disciplinary, and feels wronged, saying that her son reported it after being deceived by other family members," adding, "She seems unable to understand the pain and sorrow that a young child must have experienced."

However, the judge also stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "A has not avoided her parenting responsibilities despite raising the child alone and appears to have devoted herself in her own way," and "considering her history of depression treatment and poor health."
